Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection (Nicolas, Herman) (c.1614–1691), Carmelite lay brother and mystic.

His writings, published after his death as "Maximes spirituelles" (1692) and "Mœurs et entretiens de F. Laurent" (1694), recommend an elevated form of prayer consisting in the simple practice of the presence of God, whether by the imagination or the intellect.
For three centuries his simple wisdom has crossed denominational boundaries and theological differences to inspire spiritual seekers throughout the World. The universality of his appeal is extraordinary, but it is due in large part to the very ordinary life, in the commonest places and most mundane activities.
In the early years of publication of Brother Laurence's teachings, during and after the Quietist controversary, his simple, no-nonsence approach was refreshing and reassuring to Roman Catholics and Protestant alike. It continues to be so today, especially in an American milieu of pop-psycho-spirituality. Here is down-to-earth wisdom, a timeless mysticism without frills, a joyful spirituality with out hype.
