The International Theological Commission part of the Congregation forthe Doctrine of the Faith gathers together the most eminenttheologians from across the world, to advise the Pope on difficult orcontroversial doctrinal issues.

The question of what happens to the souls of un-baptised infants andwhere they go after death has long been of concern to parents andtheologians alike. The theory of Limbo was elaborated in the middleages to try answer this question. The 1992 Catechism of the Catholic Churchdid not mention Limbo but said that infants who die un-baptised areentrusted to the mercy of God. This document explains the reasons forthat trust.
